Student Talks 2020-21

Allie Kwong 10N

Title - Joyful Learning
Mentor - Monique Shiu 12F
I was simply blown away but not only the technical quality of her talk and her clear communication, but also by the importance of her message. Allie talks passionately about her love of learning and shares why a positive mindset and attitude are vitally important to protecting a love of learning and personal wellbeing. Her whole approach to the project shows a great understanding of the TED-Ed Talk style - she's drawn upon her own personal experiences to deliver an idea worth sharing - something I believe all Island School students should watch. Well done Allie!

Hena Yang 8N

Title - Happiness
Mentor - Aileen Bai Yang 12D
Hena has produced a confident and authentic TED-ED Talk that is guaranteed to leave you feeling happy! Her message is a simple one - we all deserve to be happy - but why aren't we? Hena explores this question and gives the audience many tips for achieving this at school. I loved her reflections and personal stories here and she peppers this with uplifting ideas and examples for our own lives. A fantastic TED-Talk, delivered clearly with great production quality. Well done!

Ella Lau 9R

Title - Green Transition
Mentor - Garv Sharma 12F
Ella gives an impassioned TED-Ed Talk on the dangers of climate change, but also suggests ways that we can try to solve the problem. Ella has infused her talk with lots of personal anecdotes and perspectives, as well as evidence of detailed research. It's clear that Ella is a public speaker to watch - confident delivery and an engaging presence - i'm looking forward to future Talks from you!

Celine Rusli 9R

Title - Finding your passion
Mentor - Gabriel Freitas 12D
Celine gives an uplifting and inspiring TED-Ed Talk on the importance of finding your passion in life. I really enjoyed how she spoke so clearly and confidently about her own personal journey of self discovery. Whilst the Talk could have been extended, she nevertheless delivers an important message in a clear and concise manner. Great work Celine!

Timothy Chan 8D

Title - Climate Change & Developing Countries
Mentor - Anya Broad 12D
Timothy has put together a well researched and innovative TED-Ed Talk about how we can help developing countries combat climate change with renewable energies. He showed great understanding of the story arc and other speaking techniques to engage the ideas. Whilst nervous at first, Timothy has put together a well constructed video worthy of his idea worth spreading. Good work Timothy - can't wait to see how you develop your public speaking further!

Vanna Lung 7W

Title - Gymnastics
Mentor - Andrea Cheung 12D
Although Vanna's TED-Ed Talk could do with a bit of polish in terms of delivery, she has given a very honest and personal take on the importance of sports in our lives. She speaks from the heart about her passion for gymnastics and has used detailed research and personal anecdotes and perspectives to engage the audience. As her first TED-Ed Talk, Vanna could work on developing her Talk idea and throughline more so that it can connect with the lives of all of us. Nevertheless, a confident start. Well done Vanna!

A public speaker to watch in the future!

Omeo Wong 7D

Chloe's TED-Ed Talk explores the idea of gender equality in sport. I love how she's woven a powerful social and political message with her own personal experiences. She's also done this in a way that engages and poses questions to the audience. Yes, next she could work on video setup and pacing/tone, but overall I really enjoy her personal take on why equality matters. Well done Chloe!
